Physical Education (P.E.)
Our skills-based curriculum has been developed not only to encourage children to challenge themselves but also to increase their participation in all physical activities and widen their experience in a multitude of sports. We want all children to be active and lead a healthy lifestyle. We ensure children know about the importance of keeping physically fit and take part in sport to improve their mental and physical well-being. To be a team player.
When pupils leave Danetree, we hope that they have developed the confidence and desire to seek further opportunities in any sport or activity.
We also strive to reflect the diversity of our school and celebrate the sporting success of the wide range of cultures that are represented at our school.

Swimming
In line with the National Curriculum, all pupils at Danetree participate in swimming lessons in Year 4. Pupils are then able to access additional 'top-up' swimming lessons to support them in achieving the National Curriculum aims:
- Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres;
- Use a range of strokes effectively;
- Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Our P.E. Learning Journey
The learning journey for P.E. follows the National Curriculum for Physical Education in Key Stage Two. Our curriculum makes use of planning from Real PE.
EYFS
Physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their coordination, control, and movement. Pupils must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity and to make healthy choices in relation to food.
This curriculum will offer these children a solid base from which their physical activity journey can continue to grow and flourish as they move through the school.
Key Stage 1
Pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Learning these basic fundamental skills of physical activity across two years ensure that, when they come to KS2, they can more confidently apply the set of skills to a range of sports such as rugby, football, netball, hockey and more. It is in KS2 that our pupils get the opportunities to play these sports competitively.
Key Stage 2
Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
‘It is fully aligned to the new National Curriculum and Ofsted requirements and focuses on the development of agility, balance and coordination, healthy competition and cooperative learning.’ (Real PE website)
A key priority for us here at Danetree is oracy, and through our motivating and challenging PE curriculum, children are able to develop their oracy skills by evaluating their own and their peers’ performances.
The Real PE curriculum is delivered over six cogs; each cog focuses on an element of learning and skills, and together, they provide the children with a strong and aspiring foundation from which to build on as they move to secondary school.
